A favour to ask....

Hi all. I am hoping that maybe someone can help me out a little. I have read the odd tutorial about making things out of builder's foam. I am not sure what this is and don't think I've seen it in Australia (and in the last four years, believe me, I have spent a LOT of time in hardware stores!!) but I would love to have a play with it. Would someone please be able to get some and send it to me here in Australia? I will of course pay for it + postage + effort required to do this for me. I will understand if no-one wants to, of course! Thanks guys!

  2. I could certainly send you some sample pieces of the material. I have quite a stash of it. It is a great deal of fun to experiment with.

But to find a local supplier you will want to ask them for EPS (expanded polystyrene)insulation board. It is used in the building industry. This foam is available in the USA in two colors from Dow Corning, blue and pink. The blue is more dense. There is also a white version from another manufacturer but it has small circular areas in the material whereas the Dow board is like a stick of butter in that it has no visible texture, completely smooth and consistent throughout the block.

If you go to my blog look at the fireplace in the Acorn Cottage, it was made with Blue Dow Corning board. It machines beautifully.

  3. Hi Shannon
I'm not sure if this is the stuff you are referring to, but below is a link to a store that sells foam board, which is what architects use to make their models from. It's pretty easy to cut using a craft knife, and can be used singly or doubled up as many times as you need to.
