Are we there yet?

Augh.... hello blog followers. Wednesday and feeling very much like hump day. Why? It's a beautiful warm sunny day. Because I have been trying to make mini flowers. Irises to be specific. And not very easy instructions. And flower making IS NOT my thing... They have been pushed aside for now. Which is why it has taken me a good two years to get to this point:

It has been a long and taxing 5 months and I am finding it a little hard to find motivation and inspiration. Also I have SO MANY unfinished projects that I have decided to finish a few things off before starting anything new. Baby steps I am telling myself.

At the end of last year, I made up some little 1:24 suitcases. They are yet to find homes (and yet to be finished), but I really like how they turned out. Made from little bits I had around the mini stash, and mostly just printed paper stuff.

I spent much of my summer either at my mum's farm, which was under bushfire threat for the best part of four months, or working for the government department responsible for managing the bushfires. It was rewarding but also tiring. We had the odd little critter come visit, including this little sweetie. It makes nice break during a long day.

Anyway, I hope your time in isolation, wherever you are in the world, is going well. Look after yourselves.

  2. Good luck with your flowers! They can be very frustrating, at least to me. And your suitcases are lovely.

  5. Love the wee cases, the detail in them is just great. It can be a chore catching up with all the unfinished tasks but once you're done you can feel really smug! Take care and keep well.

  6. I know the flowers are fiddly and can be an excruciatingly long process, but what you've got there looks so promising and will be so beautiful when finished! The impact is going to make you glad you made them, trust me!
The suitcases are so adorable and so much fun with all of the lovely things filling them up! That's a nice payoff project for when you just need to see something wonderful with only a few days work!
I am glad that you are past the worst fire danger period and are back at home again, but how wonderful of you to make the sacrifice to help both your mom and your country! If that little guy could talk I bet he'd have a harrowing tale to tell!

    1. Thanks Jodi. I am not even sure where to put the irises but I do know they will take pride of place centre front! Haha! After all the angst, they need to be noticable!! I wish I had more flower making patience as I love a miniature garden. And thanks for the kind words regarding the fire season. It sure has been a big one here in Australia, and with COVID 19 added on, it’s hard to focus and see very far ahead in the year. For now I am going to concentrate on finishing some things and take joy from that. Look after yourself. X

  7. Those suitcases are superb! I know it's been a rough year for you, and I totally understand on the lack of inspiration and motivation. As you say, baby steps. Do the things that give you pleasure and don't worry about the "shoulds." :-) Glad you are at least past fire season. That little wombat is absolutely adorable!

    1. Thanks for your kind words Deborah. It feels like a time for change and I have downsized my future project list and that has really helped mentally I think - I actually feel like I could finish what is on the list in my lifetime now!! I also hope to learn a few new skills, including patience! Hope you are well. X

  8. It's amazing how quickly the time can get away from us but I think that your efforts at helping your mom was Definitely a FIRST PRIORITY as well as your managerial help with the bushfires, those homeless little critter must be especially grateful!!!
As to your iris, I hear you loud and clear! I struggled with making them too but regardless your frustration, I know that you'll be happy with them in the end!
Also want to tell you how ADORABLE your suitcases are, Shannon- they look ABSOLUTELY SCRUMPTIOUS! Everything about them IS PERFECT!

    1. Hi Elizabeth. It’s very hard to get other things done when you are worried, so yes helping mum was the only thing I could do, and going back to work temporarily was also a way of paying it back to everyone who helped my mum. And now just trying to catch up on sleep and de-stressing. And thanks for the lovely comment re the suitcases. Sometimes things just work out, lucky for us!! X

  9. Hi Shannon! We have heard a lot about those wildfires... it has been terrifying to think about! I am glad you are okay and assume your Mother's farm is too. That little guy is adorable... it is so hard to think of the animals in these situations. As for the mini flowers... some things are really hard... and mini flower kits are among them! LOL! So don't be too hard on yourself... stick to filling suitcases for now... those are looking wonderful! Stay well, and keep making minis!

    1. Hi Betsy. Yes the fires were awful. And it’s gut wrenching driving through the burnt areas. My mum’s farms were burnt but fortunately no buildings or animals were lost. As for mini flowers, it seems to be a general consensus that they are difficult, but that is where the reward comes from isn’t it? Well, I suppose... Take care and look after yourself. X
